Thank you to everyone who braved the cold this week to kick off the Richmond and Teddington Wine Societies 2019 tastings. We had a fantastic turnout over the three nights.
Tuscany with a Twist was our theme, as we endeavoured to explore some of the lesser known facets of the region as well as celebrate some iconic estates.
No-one expected Sauvignon Blanc – but this was our fascinating first wine from the esteemed Fontodi estate, closely followed by a richly textured Vermentino from Poggio al Tesoro from Bolgheri on the West Coast – near the home of the fabled Supertuscan Sassicia.
Sangiovese then took the stage with a contrast between Rosso di Montalcino Poggio San Polo and Felsina Chianti Classico – both from the excellent 2016 vintage. Both demonstrated the quality of the grape and contrasting levels of approachability.
The Bordeaux blend Il Seggio 2015 from Poggio al Tesoro showed a new face of Tuscany with intense berry fruits and vibrant concentration.
We rounded off the evening with superb Brunello di Montalcino 2012 (RWS tasted Poggio San Polo’s, TWS tasted Cantina di Montalcino’s), and Felsina’s gloriously rich 2006 Vin Santo. A masterpiece of sweet wine making.
All the wines are available from me, they are listed on the
