Our May tastings at Teddington and Richmond Wine Societies were of wines from the glorious northwest of Spain.
As you would expect Albariño featured, with two lovely wines from the DO Rias Baixas, then we went deeper into the region where the Godello grape predominates, tasting wines from Ribeira Sacra, Valdeorras and Bierzo (which is actually over the border in Castilla y León). This provided four contrasting wines, with great complex flavours and lovely mouthfeels. The price points began to get a bit toppy though.
We finished with a red wine from DO Ribeira Sacra, mainly made from the Mencia grape, which is one we should all drink more of!
Chicken and mushroom lasagne at Teddintgon followed by some very superior cheese, duck salad and fishcakes (with chips!) at the Britannia, made both evenings top nights out. We even sat out on the roof terrace at Richmond!
