Tasting events and more for wine lovers in Richmond

Richmond Wine Society

Since 2006 Richmond Wine Society has run monthly wine tastings covering a diverse range of wines in a relaxed and enjoyable atmosphere.

We meet in person at the Britannia Inn, in Brewer’s Lane, in their upstairs room, and the price of the tasting includes a two course meal with wine. We occasionally meet at the Waterman’s in Water Lane.  Most months we run two events (the same lineup of wines at each), usually on a Sunday and a Monday. We have a membership of over 200, and every month over 50 people attend across the two nights.

The format of the evening is designed to be friendly and informal, but informative as well. Absolutely no knowledge of wine is required and whether you are a complete novice or an experienced taster there is plenty to learn and enjoy – most of the wines we taste retail at £10-£50, and some months we sample something very rare and expensive.

Read the blog to find out about what we have been tastings.  This year’s events are shown below, the current event can be booked by clicking on ‘Tickets’.

The host is Tim Syrad.  Tim has over 30 years experience entertaining and informing people about wine, and is a member of the Association of Wine Educators, holding the WSET Diploma in Wine. He also runs the Teddington Society, as well as fine wine Masterclasses, occasional wine courses, corporate events and wine tours.  He is a fervent advocate that wine tasting should be fun, celebrating the enjoyment that wine brings, whether in discovering a new wine variety or region, or perceiving a new aroma or taste, or identifying a fascinating match between wine and food.

An evening of high quality food-friendly wines awaits.

Richmond Wine Society - Australia's Amazing Diversity @ The Britannia

An evening of discovery of the amazing range of wine styles that this huge country produces.  Whites vary from rich Chardonnays in Western Australia to the light but complex Semillons of Hunter Valley, reds from elegant Pinot Noirs of Victoria to the blockbuster ‘GSM’s and Shirazes of South Australia, and of course Tasmania produces some pretty stunning fizz.

Richmond Wine Society - Pinot Noir around the world @ The Britannia

The revered grape variety of Burgundy is thought to be one of the most difficult to grow, with its tendency to mutate in the vineyard, and its extreme sensitivity to ‘terroir’.  Luckily for wine lovers, the perseverance of wine makers across the planet has allowed a variety of styles to emerge that express Pinot’s wonderful complexity.  We will enjoy wines from five continents.

May 4 @ 7:30 pm – 10:00 pm
Richmond Wine Society - Wines with Altitude @ The Britannia

This month we are challenging ourselves, finding wines that are grown at altitudes over 500m above sea level.  With altitude come sunshine and heat (yes, high places really are closer to the sun), but cool nights (heat is lost quickly in the thinner air), perfect for extending growing season and ensuring complex flavours and elegant structure. We will enjoy wines from places as varied as Switzerland, Sicily, Sardinia and Salta (and others not beginning with ‘S’).

Richmond Wine Society - Rosé @ The Britannia

Thanks to the efforts of extremely talented and commercially savvy winemakers in Provence, rosé is nowadays considered to be an aspirational wine to make, rather than something you churned out to reduce the concentration of your red wines!  However, not all pink is pale, and we will explore a gamut of styles from the most delicate to truly age-worthy food oriented wines.

This tasting could only be led by Fliss – who will strive not to get too technical but will investigate the contrasts between regions half way between pole and equator, whose geography results in some very different styles of wines.  Bordeaux, Northern Rhone, Piedmont, Romania, Xinjiang (41), Oregon, Nova Scotia are all at 45°N, and let’s not forgot Chubut in Argentina and Central Otago in New Zealand which share this latitude south of the equator!

“Throughout the 17 years I have attended Tim’s wine tasting events, he has continued to deliver his extensive knowledge of wine and wine-making with great charm, and lots of humour, making the evenings not only informative, but also great fun. In the course of an average year, the tastings cover a kaleidoscope of different wine themes – interesting and entertaining for all, novices and experts alike. And the wines taste pretty good too!”
"We have been going to Teddington Wine Society events for a number of years. Tim runs the evenings with bonhomie and humour and wears his considerable knowledge lightly. The evenings are great fun, the wines are always a little bit different and help to expand knowledge and tasting horizons.”
“I have attended the Richmond Wine society for over ten years and always enjoyed Tim’s self-effacing style and gentle humour. His knowledge is globally eclectic and presented in a clear, interesting and always stimulating way. Every guest I have taken there has enjoyed the evening immensely. Tim also offers a wide range of wines to buy and my red cellar has provided great pleasure to my own dinner guests.”
"I’ve been enjoying Tim’s tastings for over 20 years - he is a great teacher, raconteur and wine expert. He is seriously passionate about his wine, but there is nothing serious about his tastings, which are always informal and relaxed. A lovely way to spend an evening and enjoy some fantastic wines."
