Top shop recommendations

My Classic Spanish online tasting is next week – wines available here.

Final few days of amazing prices and volume discounts for the Kilikanoon GSM from Clare Valley and the Pouilly Fuissé from Domaine Chanson.

I am an independent wine merchant and educator based in Teddington.

I run local Wine Societies in Richmond, Teddington and Surbiton, and am delighted that our monthly tastings are getting started again with Richmond at the Britannia at the end of July and Teddington in August.

I run private events, and tastings for local groups (sports clubs, PTAs), and I have a corporate events business called Taste of the Grape.  Every year I take groups of people to destinations all over the world on Wine Holidays.

I won the 2019 Wanderlust World Guide Awards Specialist Tour Guide of the Year.

Commended for my infectious passion, and being the perfect link between winemakers and travellers, I was given the award at the National Geographical Society.  The judges based their decision on the feedback from the dozens of clients who have been on tour with me.

Richmond Wine Society – annual Blind Tasting @ The Britannia Pub
Aug 25 @ 7:30 pm – 10:30 pm
Richmond Wine Society - annual Blind Tasting @ The Britannia Pub

Every year we dust off our tasting technique, and put our noses and palates through their paces on an eclectic selection of wines – the lucky winner will be crowned ‘Blind Wine Tasting Champion of 2010’. As regulars know, absolutely no knowledge is required to do well!

This event has become a stalwart of the calendar and serves to remind everyone that wine is about enjoyment first and foremost. A completely level playing field is created by tasting blind and with the subtle use of multiple choice questions, red herring commentary from Tim and a few easy to guess wines means anyone can be the winner!

We look forward to seeing you there.

Tim Syrad, who has 25 years experience of running wine tastings, runs Richmond Wine Society, which meets (generally) on the last Tuesday and Wednesday of the month at the Britannia Pub, Brewer’s Lane, Richmond.  Tim is a fervent advocate that wine is to be enjoyed without snobbery. Whether you are a complete novice or an experienced taster, there will be plenty to learn and enjoy.  Tim also runs the monthly Teddington Wine Society and hosts fine wine tastings and dinners in local restaurants.

Richmond Wine Society explores South Africa @ The Britannia Pub
Oct 27 @ 7:30 pm – 10:30 pm
Richmond Wine Society explores South Africa @ The Britannia Pub

Old world or new world?

It’s an accepted cliché that anywhere outside mainland Europe is part of the “new world”. But as in Argentina and Chile, Vitis Vinifera grapes were planted in South Africa hundreds of years before the modern wine making traditions that we are familiar with started to develop in the 19th Century. South Africa’s oldest wine estate, Constantia, was established in 1685, and Vin de Constance was being exported to Europe in the late 1700s. This is a country with a rich wine making past, developed by both French Hugenots and Dutch Boers, and now being handed from the KWV behemoth to a new rainbow generation of independent winemakers.

The majority of winemaking is in the rugged Western Cape, whose mountainous ancient soils are never far from the cooling effects of the Atlantic and Indian Oceans. We will taste wines from the major coastal regions including Paarl, Stellenbosch, Franschoek, Elgin/Walker Bay and Constantia in the foothills of Table Mountain. Pinotage is South Africa’s signature red grape, and Chenin Blanc has developed a fabulous reputation here, but we will also taste major international varieties such as Chardonnay (still and sparkling), Cabernet Sauvignon, and of course Muscat in sublime Constantia sweet wine.

We look forward to seeing you there.

“Throughout the 17 years I have attended Tim’s wine tasting events, he has continued to deliver his extensive knowledge of wine and wine-making with great charm, and lots of humour, making the evenings not only informative, but also great fun. In the course of an average year, the tastings cover a kaleidoscope of different wine themes – interesting and entertaining for all, novices and experts alike. And the wines taste pretty good too!”
"We have been going to Teddington Wine Society events for a number of years. Tim runs the evenings with bonhomie and humour and wears his considerable knowledge lightly. The evenings are great fun, the wines are always a little bit different and help to expand knowledge and tasting horizons.”
“I have attended the Richmond Wine society for over ten years and always enjoyed Tim’s self-effacing style and gentle humour. His knowledge is globally eclectic and presented in a clear, interesting and always stimulating way. Every guest I have taken there has enjoyed the evening immensely. Tim also offers a wide range of wines to buy and my red cellar has provided great pleasure to my own dinner guests.”
"I’ve been enjoying Tim’s tastings for over 20 years - he is a great teacher, raconteur and wine expert. He is seriously passionate about his wine, but there is nothing serious about his tastings, which are always informal and relaxed. A lovely way to spend an evening and enjoy some fantastic wines."
