I am an independent wine merchant and educator based in Teddington.

I run local Wine Societies in Richmond, Teddington and Surbiton, and am delighted that our monthly tastings have started again with Richmond at the Britannia and Teddington, currently at St Mary’s Parish Hall.  The inaugral Surbiton Wine Society tasting is on the 1st October.  I work closely with all of the venues I use, and ensure we adhere to all social distancing and hygiene requirements.

I am still running my online tastings so everyone can continue to enjoy a fantastic range of wines at home – in September we will explore some classic wines from the New World.

I run private events, and tastings for local groups (sports clubs, PTAs), and I have a corporate events business called Taste of the Grape.  Every year I take groups of people to destinations all over the world on Wine Holidays.

In September we will be enjoying an online tasting of classic wines from the New World.  My online tasting of Classic Spanish wines is still available – find it here.

My fabulous range of wines and online tastings can deliver a wine event in the comfort of your home.

Please take a look at my online tastings and don’t hesitate to get in touch if you would like any advice about wine, suggestions for food and cheese pairing (I know the Teddington Cheese range intimately) or would like to find out more about anything I do.

I won the 2019 Wanderlust World Guide Awards Specialist Tour Guide of the Year.

Commended for my infectious passion, and being the perfect link between winemakers and travellers, I was given the award at the National Geographical Society.  The judges based their decision on the feedback from the dozens of clients who have been on tour with me.

Surbiton Wine Society - A Whistlestop Tour Round the Wonderful World of Wine @ The Elizabethan Suite, Glenmore House

Our very first event takes place on Thursday 1st October at 7.30pm, in the downstairs bar of Glenmore House, The Crescent.  Our subject is “A Whistlestop Tour Round the Wonderful World of Wine”, it will be a great introduction to our programme of events for the rest of the year.

Absolutely no wine expertise is required, and whether you are a complete novice or an experienced taster, there will be plenty to learn and enjoy.  Use the ‘Tickets’ link above to book your ticket, or get in touch by email or phone.

We will commence with a welcome glass of wine, and over the course of the evening we will explore at least eight wines, including contrasting sparkling wines, reds and whites, and  wines from the Old World (ie Europe) and New World. At least one of the wines we taste will retail for more than £50/bottle!

Note this event has been rescheduled – it was due to take place on 16th March, but postponed due to  COVID-19.

Based on the successful re-commencement of Richmond and Teddington Wine Societies, and this will be an enjoyable evening that will be run with careful attention to safety.  Attendance must be booked and we will ensure seating arrangements accommodate appropriate social distancing requirements.

Richmond Wine Society explores South Africa @ The Britannia Pub

Old world or new world?

It’s an accepted cliché that anywhere outside mainland Europe is part of the “new world”. But as in Argentina and Chile, Vitis Vinifera grapes were planted in South Africa hundreds of years before the modern wine making traditions that we are familiar with started to develop in the 19th Century. South Africa’s oldest wine estate, Constantia, was established in 1685, and Vin de Constance was being exported to Europe in the late 1700s. This is a country with a rich wine making past, developed by both French Hugenots and Dutch Boers, and now being handed from the KWV behemoth to a new rainbow generation of independent winemakers.

The majority of winemaking is in the rugged Western Cape, whose mountainous ancient soils are never far from the cooling effects of the Atlantic and Indian Oceans. We will taste wines from the major coastal regions including Paarl, Stellenbosch, Franschoek, Elgin/Walker Bay and Constantia in the foothills of Table Mountain. Pinotage is South Africa’s signature red grape, and Chenin Blanc has developed a fabulous reputation here, but we will also taste major international varieties such as Chardonnay (still and sparkling), Cabernet Sauvignon, and of course Muscat in sublime Constantia sweet wine.

We look forward to seeing you there.

“Throughout the 17 years I have attended Tim’s wine tasting events, he has continued to deliver his extensive knowledge of wine and wine-making with great charm, and lots of humour, making the evenings not only informative, but also great fun. In the course of an average year, the tastings cover a kaleidoscope of different wine themes – interesting and entertaining for all, novices and experts alike. And the wines taste pretty good too!”
"We have been going to Teddington Wine Society events for a number of years. Tim runs the evenings with bonhomie and humour and wears his considerable knowledge lightly. The evenings are great fun, the wines are always a little bit different and help to expand knowledge and tasting horizons.”
“I have attended the Richmond Wine society for over ten years and always enjoyed Tim’s self-effacing style and gentle humour. His knowledge is globally eclectic and presented in a clear, interesting and always stimulating way. Every guest I have taken there has enjoyed the evening immensely. Tim also offers a wide range of wines to buy and my red cellar has provided great pleasure to my own dinner guests.”
"I’ve been enjoying Tim’s tastings for over 20 years - he is a great teacher, raconteur and wine expert. He is seriously passionate about his wine, but there is nothing serious about his tastings, which are always informal and relaxed. A lovely way to spend an evening and enjoy some fantastic wines."
