Richmond Wine Society - Australia in focus @ The Britannia Pub

Having spent virtually all of last November visiting wine regions in across Australia, I felt a review of this amazing country’s wines was the perfect way to kick off our 2020 tasting schedule.

We will explore a wide range of grape varieties (not just Chardonnay and Shiraz!), wine styles and regions that have put Australia firmly on the quality wine map: the Yarra Valley in Victoria, McLaren Vale in South Australia and Margaret River in Western Australia to name but three.

Many of the winemakers we met in November described climate change as their number one concern, and the fires that have ravaged South Eastern Australia over the last few weeks have made that threat a horrible reality for some vineyards. Let’s show our support for these talented, ingenious vignerons by celebrating the fabulous wines they make.

We look forward to seeing you there.

Tim Syrad, who has 25 years experience of running wine tastings, runs Richmond Wine Society, which meets (generally) on the last Tuesday and Wednesday of the month at the Britannia Pub, Brewer’s Lane, Richmond.  Tim is a fervent advocate that wine is to be enjoyed without snobbery. Whether you are a complete novice or an experienced taster, there will be plenty to learn and enjoy.  Tim also runs the monthly Teddington Wine Society and hosts fine wine tastings and dinners in local restaurants.

Fine Wine Tasting with Dinner – Parker Points @ Bacco
Feb 10 @ 7:30 pm – 10:30 pm
Fine Wine Tasting with Dinner - Parker Points @ Bacco | England | United Kingdom

Parker Points are one of the most polarising concepts in wine appreciation. For some they give confidence in a wine, which could mean that quality is assured or a high price justified. For others they are a blight, that has fuelled the growth of over-ripe, over-alcoholic, over-oaked, over-priced wines that lack regional character and deter more nuanced discussion.

We will consider whether Robert Parker is being blamed for a trend that would have happened anyway (warmer climate + greater investment in vineyard and winery = riper grapes and bigger wines), and whether he should be celebrated as one of the first (and still very few) critics who always paid for his own wine, and who only judged wine on how it tastes (rather than the name on the label, or the appellation it came from).

Fine wine tasting dinners are an opportunity to try more expensive wines than at our regular tastings at Richmond and Teddington, and Bacco always produces a fabulous meal.

Richmond Wine Society explores Portugal @ The Britannia Pub

Portugese wine is probably among the most under-rated and good value in the world, and its fortunes are on the rise. Consistent sunshine and long growing season make for ripe and flavoursome wines, while proximity to the Atlantic means its climate is cooler than you might expect from holidaying in the Algarve, ensuring freshness and complexity.

We will explore a variety of vibrant wine styles from different regions: fresh whites from Vinho Verde, complex reds from the Douro, Dão and Bairrada, fabulous foody whites and reds from Alentejo and even a sweetie from Setúbal.

We look forward to seeing you there.

Mar 11 @ 7:30 pm – 10:30 pm
Fine Wine Tasting with Dinner - Napa Valley and the Corison Collection @ Le Salon Privé | Twickenham | United Kingdom

Napa Valley needs no introduction, but it is very rare indeed to have the chance to sample a vertical tasting of a top estate’s signature wine. We will remind ourselves of some of Napa’s key regions, and then focus on Corison wines with a tasting of six vintages.

Cathy Corison has been making wines in Napa since the 1970s, and since 1987 she has made wines under her own label from Cabernet Sauvignon grapes grown on the gravelly loams of the valley floor. She is one of the original female winemakers in Napa, and has focused on making wines from cooler sites and older vines with as little intervention as possible.

Fine wine tasting dinners are hosted by Tim Syrad, who has 25 years experience of running wine tastings, and also runs the monthly Richmond and Teddington Wine Societies.  He is a fervent advocate that wine is to be enjoyed without snobbery. Whether you are a complete novice or an experienced taster, there will be plenty to learn and enjoy.

Grown everywhere, capable of sublime elegance and complexity, but generally distinctive characteristics – blackcurrant, tomato leaf, cedarwood and of course tannin. Why has this grape variety been so successful?

We will explore how a crossing of two Bordeaux varieties (Cabernet Franc and Sauvignon Blanc) has in just a couple of centuries become a flagship of regions as diverse as Coonawarra in South Australia, Maipo in Chile, California’s Napa Valley, Mendoza in Argentina, Stellenbosch in South Africa, Tuscany, the Languedoc and of course Bordeaux itself.

Fine Wine Tasting with Dinner - Sangiovese @ Bacco | England | United Kingdom

I am setting myself a challenge here – to explore this grape variety, whose identity seems inextricably linked with Tuscany, yet is grown throughout Italy and indeed the world.

An opportunity for Bacco to pull out the stops, this will be a night of superb Italian gastronomy and some revelations about a surprisingly little known grape.

Fine wine tasting dinners are an opportunity to try more expensive wines than at our regular tastings at Richmond and Teddington, and Bacco always produces a fabulous meal.

It’s incredible but in all the years of RWS we have only focussed on the wines of New Zealand once before.  Definitely something to put right – and what a treat we have in store: we will cover both islands – from Auckland and Hawkes Bay in the North, where Syrah ripens beautifully, through Martinborough and Marlborough where Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc are to the fore, and on to Southern Otago, home to some of the most stunning Pinot Noir and Pinot Gris to be found in the world.

We look forward to seeing you there.

But we can promise an evening at home of fine wine, good food and convivial company – a chance for me to do some cooking (possibly based on the cuisine we have experienced in the spring tours to Greece, Austria and Southern Burgundy), and open an eclectic collection of wine.

Fine Wine Tasting with Dinner – Chateau Musar 10 years on @ Bacco
Sep 14 @ 7:30 pm – 10:30 pm
Fine Wine Tasting with Dinner - Chateau Musar 10 years on @ Bacco | England | United Kingdom

Our last tasting of Musar wines was in February 2010, and it’s safe to assume a lot has happened since then. The Hochar family have made wine under conditions of incredible adversity since 1930, in the Bekaa Valley where gravelly soil, altitude, and mountain shelter provide almost perfect conditions for the old Cabernet Sauvignon Cinsault and Carignan vines. We will taste a range of vintages, comparing flagship Musar to the more forward Hochar Père et Fils second wines, and getting to know the distinctive white, made from indigenous varieties.

Fine wine tasting dinners are an opportunity to try more expensive wines than at our regular tastings at Richmond and Teddington, and Bacco always produces a fabulous meal.

Tim Syrad has 25 years experience of running wine tastings, and also runs the monthly Richmond and Teddington Wine Societies.  He is a fervent advocate that wine is to be enjoyed without snobbery. Whether you are a complete novice or an experienced taster, there will be plenty to learn and enjoy.

Fine Wine Tasting with Dinner – Modern Port @ Le Salon Privé
Oct 14 @ 7:30 pm – 10:30 pm
Fine Wine Tasting with Dinner - Modern Port @ Le Salon Privé | Twickenham | United Kingdom

Port wine has an amazing history and tradition, inextricably linked to the fondness of British palates for sunshine preserved through winemaking and fortification. But unlike Sherry, whose history is very similar, Port has in the last few decades flourished and continues to be a popular and widely desired drink. In this tasting we will investigate how leading producers are continuing to keep Port relevant, incorporating modern vineyard and winemaking practices that ensure quality has never been higher.

We can look forward to a superb four course meal from the Salon Privé that will demonstrate Port’s versatility as a food wine as well as an aperitif or digestif.

Richmond Wine Society explores South Africa @ The Britannia Pub

Old world or new world?

It’s an accepted cliché that anywhere outside mainland Europe is part of the “new world”. But as in Argentina and Chile, Vitis Vinifera grapes were planted in South Africa hundreds of years before the modern wine making traditions that we are familiar with started to develop in the 19th Century. South Africa’s oldest wine estate, Constantia, was established in 1685, and Vin de Constance was being exported to Europe in the late 1700s. This is a country with a rich wine making past, developed by both French Hugenots and Dutch Boers, and now being handed from the KWV behemoth to a new rainbow generation of independent winemakers.

The majority of winemaking is in the rugged Western Cape, whose mountainous ancient soils are never far from the cooling effects of the Atlantic and Indian Oceans. We will taste wines from the major coastal regions including Paarl, Stellenbosch, Franschoek, Elgin/Walker Bay and Constantia in the foothills of Table Mountain. Pinotage is South Africa’s signature red grape, and Chenin Blanc has developed a fabulous reputation here, but we will also taste major international varieties such as Chardonnay (still and sparkling), Cabernet Sauvignon, and of course Muscat in sublime Constantia sweet wine.

We look forward to seeing you there.
