Tasting events and more for wine lovers in Teddington

Teddington Wine Society

Teddington Wine Society runs regular wine tastings covering a diverse range of wines in a relaxed and enjoyable atmosphere.

We meet at the Landmark Arts Centre, in the Bell Room, and the price of the tasting includes a buffet meal with wine.  We meet on a series of Fridays throughout the year. We have a membership of over 100, and every month over 30 people attend.

As venues can now operate with appropriate social distancing, we are delighted to recommence our monthly tastings.   Unfortunately the Landmark has not yet opened, but St Mary’s Church Hall has been very welcoming.    Social distancing protocols will be in place and we will be following all relevant protocols on food preparation and service.  However, we are not stopping our online tastings, and Tim will record and upload them to the Youtube channel,  endeavouring to use the same wines for both the live and video experience.

The format of the evening is designed to be friendly and informal, but informative as well. Absolutely no knowledge of wine is required and whether you are a complete novice or an experienced taster there is plenty to learn and enjoy – most of the wines we taste retail at £10-£50, and some months we sample something very rare and expensive.  Read the blog to find out about our latest tastings.

The host is Tim Syrad.  Tim has over 25 years experience entertaining and informing people about wine, and is a member of the Association of Wine Educators. He also runs the Richmond and Surbiton Wine Societies, as well as fine wine Masterclasses, occasional wine courses, corporate events and wine tours.  He is a fervent advocate that wine tasting should be fun, celebrating the enjoyment that wine brings, whether in discovering a new wine variety or region, or perceiving a new aroma or taste, or identifying a fascinating match between wine and food.

The Wines of Spain is the theme for August and a terrific tasting is in store as we taste a top class range that will showcase the diversity and quality that this wine nation produces. Rioja, Ribera, Galicia, Catalonia and more will be represented.
As the Landmark is not yet open we will be meeting at St Mary’s Parish Hall.

Capacity will be limited and social distancing protocols will be in place but I am sure we can create the same joyous atmosphere!  We will be serving a dinner and will be following all relevant protocols on food preparation and service.

Teddington Wine Society Medal and Trophy Winners Tasting @ Landmark Arts Centre

The Decanter World Wine Awards, International Wine Challenge, Sommeliers’ Wine Awards and Independent Wine Merchant Top 100 are each year judged by panels of wine experts, who taste the wines blind. First winners are chosen for particular regions or grape varieties, these then go into competition for country trophies or even higher accolades.

We will taste Gold and Platinum Medal Winners, Best in Show and discover some truly great value wines.

We look forward to seeing you.

Teddington Wine Society explores South Africa @ Landmark Arts Centre

Old world or new world?

It’s an accepted cliché that anywhere outside mainland Europe is part of the “new world”. But as in Argentina and Chile, Vitis Vinifera grapes were planted in South Africa hundreds of years before the modern wine making traditions that we are familiar with started to develop in the 19th Century. South Africa’s oldest wine estate, Constantia, was established in 1685, and Vin de Constance was being exported to Europe in the late 1700s. This is a country with a rich wine making past, developed by both French Hugenots and Dutch Boers, and now being handed from the KWV behemoth to a new rainbow generation of independent winemakers.

The majority of winemaking is in the rugged Western Cape, whose mountainous ancient soils are never far from the cooling effects of the Atlantic and Indian Oceans. We will taste wines from the major coastal regions including Paarl, Stellenbosch, Franschoek, Elgin/Walker Bay and Constantia in the foothills of Table Mountain. Pinotage is South Africa’s signature red grape, and Chenin Blanc has developed a fabulous reputation here, but we will also taste major international varieties such as Chardonnay (still and sparkling), Cabernet Sauvignon, and of course Muscat in sublime Constantia sweet wine.

We look forward to seeing you.

Meet Tim Syrad

“Throughout the 17 years I have attended Tim’s wine tasting events, he has continued to deliver his extensive knowledge of wine and wine-making with great charm, and lots of humour, making the evenings not only informative, but also great fun. In the course of an average year, the tastings cover a kaleidoscope of different wine themes – interesting and entertaining for all, novices and experts alike. And the wines taste pretty good too!”
"We have been going to Teddington Wine Society events for a number of years. Tim runs the evenings with bonhomie and humour and wears his considerable knowledge lightly. The evenings are great fun, the wines are always a little bit different and help to expand knowledge and tasting horizons.”
“I have attended the Richmond Wine society for over ten years and always enjoyed Tim’s self-effacing style and gentle humour. His knowledge is globally eclectic and presented in a clear, interesting and always stimulating way. Every guest I have taken there has enjoyed the evening immensely. Tim also offers a wide range of wines to buy and my red cellar has provided great pleasure to my own dinner guests.”
"I’ve been enjoying Tim’s tastings for over 20 years - he is a great teacher, raconteur and wine expert. He is seriously passionate about his wine, but there is nothing serious about his tastings, which are always informal and relaxed. A lovely way to spend an evening and enjoy some fantastic wines."
