Tasting events and more for wine lovers in Teddington

Teddington Wine Society

Teddington Wine Society runs monthly wine tastings in St Mary’s Parish Hall on Langham Road.  We enjoy a diverse range of wines in a relaxed and enjoyable atmosphere, with a two course meal.  We have a membership of over 100, and every month over 30 people attend.

The format of the evening is designed to be friendly and informal, but informative as well. Absolutely no knowledge of wine is required and whether you are a complete novice or an experienced taster there is plenty to learn and enjoy – most of the wines we taste retail at £10-£50, and some months we sample something very rare and expensive.

Read the blog to find out about what we have been tastings.  This year’s events are shown below, the current event can be booked by clicking on ‘Tickets’.

The host is Tim Syrad.  Tim has over 30 years experience entertaining and informing people about wine, and is a member of the Association of Wine Educators, holding the WSET Diploma in Wine. He also runs the Richmond Wine Society, as well as fine wine Masterclasses, occasional wine courses, corporate events and wine tours.  He is a fervent advocate that wine tasting should be fun, celebrating the enjoyment that wine brings, whether in discovering a new wine variety or region, or perceiving a new aroma or taste, or identifying a fascinating match between wine and food.

Teddington Wine Society - Southern Italy, from Lazio to Puglia @ St Mary's Parish Hall
Southern Italy is home to some fabulous wines that do not achieve the same awareness as their northern counterparts – or indeed even Sicily!  Lazio, home to Frascati, is benefitting from investment in modern wine making techniques that are creating fresh whites and high quality reds.  Campania, with its volcanic soils, is the source of the wonderful whites Greco di Tufo and Fiano di Avellino, and the top class reds of Taurasi, made from the Aglianico grape variety, which is also grown in neighbouring Basilicata.  Puglia (the heel of the boot) and Calabria (its toe) supplies flavorsome reds, made from Primitivo, Negroamaro and the wonderfully named Susumaniello and Gaglioppo.

For some wine lovers these terms are a ‘code’ – indicating specialness – surely grapes untainted by human interference produce the best wines.
For others they are an excuse to charge a lot of money for wines that are no different (or possibly worse) than their conventional counterparts.
Our light-hearted exploration of what these winemaking approaches actually mean will include a blind tasting of a couple of wines to see if we really can spot the difference!  But most importantly we should come away with an understanding of why we might keep or change our views about these increasingly promoted wine categories.

Teddington Wine Society - Chardonnay @ St Mary's Parish Hall
Is ABC OOD?
Chardonnay, the grape variety of white Burgundy, with its amazing versatility and, to be frank, ease of cultivation, became the go-to variety for planting throughout the new world.  But its reputation became tarnished by a number of high alcohol, super-ripe, generously-oaked wines that for many were frankly “too much”, resulting in the ‘Anything But Chardonnay’ movement.
This event will show that this simplification is definitely ‘Out Of Date’.
Dedicated winemakers have been cultivating Chardonnay to restrain its natural exuberance, and using modern winemaking techniques that bring out its wonderful flavour palate.  We will taste brilliantly made wines from around the world, that showcase the balance, complexity and finesse that this much maligned grape is capable of.

Fresh from our wine tours to the Loire Valley, this will be a wonderful opportunity to explore the wonderful range of wines that this fabulous region has to offer.  Whites range from fresh Muscadets from the coast, through the amazing range of dry and sweet styles that Chenin Blanc produces, through to aromatic wines from Sancerre and Pouilly Fumé.  Reds and rosés are made from Cabernet, Pinot Noir and other varieties, and of course we must not forget fizz!

Meet Tim Syrad

“Throughout the 17 years I have attended Tim’s wine tasting events, he has continued to deliver his extensive knowledge of wine and wine-making with great charm, and lots of humour, making the evenings not only informative, but also great fun. In the course of an average year, the tastings cover a kaleidoscope of different wine themes – interesting and entertaining for all, novices and experts alike. And the wines taste pretty good too!”
"We have been going to Teddington Wine Society events for a number of years. Tim runs the evenings with bonhomie and humour and wears his considerable knowledge lightly. The evenings are great fun, the wines are always a little bit different and help to expand knowledge and tasting horizons.”
“I have attended the Richmond Wine society for over ten years and always enjoyed Tim’s self-effacing style and gentle humour. His knowledge is globally eclectic and presented in a clear, interesting and always stimulating way. Every guest I have taken there has enjoyed the evening immensely. Tim also offers a wide range of wines to buy and my red cellar has provided great pleasure to my own dinner guests.”
"I’ve been enjoying Tim’s tastings for over 20 years - he is a great teacher, raconteur and wine expert. He is seriously passionate about his wine, but there is nothing serious about his tastings, which are always informal and relaxed. A lovely way to spend an evening and enjoy some fantastic wines."
