It was a privilege to attend the 20th anniversary wine tasting at the Goring & Streatley Wine Society last week. Having been part of my life for over ten years, it was great to catch up with some old friends, and a pleasure to celebrate such a milestone.
The tasting, led by Ian Hewson, was quite magnificent. We kicked off with some vintage English fizz from the Hattingley estate in Hampshire, yet another example of the outstanding progress English sparkling wines have made. The Greywacke Riesling was outstanding – quintessential lemon, lime and minerality.
We then proceeded through a Who’s Who of some of the top wines of the world. The Vino del Olivo 2007 Contino was breathtaking Rioja; the Barolo 2007 from Conterno was about as good as it gets.
The evening culminated with one of the most famous wines of the world: Chateau d’Yquem 2006. Do I need to say more at £250 per bottle?
