Bordeaux has dominated the world of wine for centuries. The famous classification of 1855 merely documented what was already known, that the Médoc peninsula has some of best terroirs in the world, and in the following 100 years it came to epitomise wines made from Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. But times change and Bordeaux has increasingly been challenged by new regions with more reliable climates, while becoming a victim of its own success, producing more wine that it can sell. The good news for us is that the Bordelais’ response to these headwinds has been to focus on quality and better value for money, and whether white, rosé, sparkling or red, they are producing wonderful wines at reasonable prices.
Tim Syrad, who has 25 years experience of running wine tastings, runs Richmond and Teddington Wine Societies, which meet monthly. Tim is a fervent advocate that wine is to be enjoyed without snobbery. Whether you are a complete novice or an experienced taster, there will be plenty to learn and enjoy.
