Teddington Wine Society

Teddington Wine Society runs regular wine tastings covering a diverse range of wines in a relaxed and enjoyable atmosphere.

We meet at the Landmark Arts Centre, in the Bell Room, and the price of the tasting includes a buffet meal with wine.  We meet on a series of Fridays throughout the year. We have a membership of over 100, and every month over 30 people attend.

The format of the evening is designed to be friendly and informal, but informative as well. Absolutely no knowledge of wine is required and whether you are a complete novice or an experienced taster there is plenty to learn and enjoy – most of the wines we taste retail at £10-£50, and some months we sample something very rare and expensive.  Read the blog to find out about our latest tastings.

The host is Tim Syrad.  Tim has over 25 years experience entertaining and informing people about wine, and is a member of the Association of Wine Educators. He also runs the Richmond and St Margarets Wine Societies, as well as fine wine Masterclasseswine coursescorporate events and wine tours.  He is a fervent advocate that wine tasting should be fun, celebrating the enjoyment that wine brings, whether in discovering a new wine variety or region, or perceiving a new aroma or taste, or identifying a fascinating match between wine and food.

Teddington Wine Society - Australia in Focus @ Landmark Arts Centre

Having spent virtually all of last November visiting wine regions in across Australia, I felt a review of this amazing country’s wines was the perfect way to kick off our 2020 tasting schedule.

We will explore a wide range of grape varieties (not just Chardonnay and Shiraz!), wine styles and regions that have put Australia firmly on the quality wine map: the Yarra Valley in Victoria, McLaren Vale in South Australia and Margaret River in Western Australia to name but three.

Many of the winemakers we met in November described climate change as their number one concern, and the fires that have ravaged South Eastern Australia over the last few weeks have made that threat a horrible reality for some vineyards. Let’s show our support for these talented, ingenious vignerons by celebrating the fabulous wines they make.

We look forward to seeing you.

Portugese wine is probably among the most under-rated and good value in the world, and its fortunes are on the rise. Consistent sunshine and long growing season make for ripe and flavoursome wines, while proximity to the Atlantic means its climate is cooler than you might expect from holidaying in the Algarve, ensuring freshness and complexity.

We will explore a variety of vibrant wine styles from different regions: fresh whites from Vinho Verde, complex reds from the Douro, Dão and Bairrada, fabulous foody whites and reds from Alentejo and even a sweetie from Setúbal.

We look forward to seeing you.

Grown everywhere, capable of sublime elegance and complexity, but generally distinctive characteristics – blackcurrant, tomato leaf, cedarwood and of course tannin. Why has this grape variety been so successful?

We will explore how a crossing of two Bordeaux varieties (Cabernet Franc and Sauvignon Blanc) has in just a couple of centuries become a flagship of regions as diverse as Coonawarra in South Australia, Maipo in Chile, California’s Napa Valley, Mendoza in Argentina, Stellenbosch in South Africa, Tuscany, the Languedoc and of course Bordeaux itself.

It’s incredible but in all the years of TWS, we have only focussed on the wines of New Zealand once before.  Definitely something to put right – and what a treat we have in store: we will cover both islands – from Auckland and Hawkes Bay in the North, where Syrah ripens beautifully, through Martinborough and Marlborough where Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc are to the fore, and on to Southern Otago, home to some of the most stunning Pinot Noir and Pinot Gris to be found in the world.

We look forward to seeing you.

The weather is warming up, time to get the garden furniture out and dig out that bottle of Retsina….

And throw it away! Because we need to reappraise our views of Greek wine. As the tours I am running in April and May will explore, the effects of altitude and sea breezes create fabulous microclimates that a talented new generation of winemakers to make ripe, fresh, complex wines in just about every style possible. Timed perfectly to ensure Greek wine is a major part of your summer drinking repertoire.

We look forward to seeing you.

The Decanter World Wine Awards, International Wine Challenge, Sommeliers’ Wine Awards and Independent Wine Merchant Top 100 are each year judged by panels of wine experts, who taste the wines blind. First winners are chosen for particular regions or grape varieties, these then go into competition for country trophies or even higher accolades.

We will taste Gold and Platinum Medal Winners, Best in Show and discover some truly great value wines.

Old world or new world?

It’s an accepted cliché that anywhere outside mainland Europe is part of the “new world”. But as in Argentina and Chile, Vitis Vinifera grapes were planted in South Africa hundreds of years before the modern wine making traditions that we are familiar with started to develop in the 19th Century. South Africa’s oldest wine estate, Constantia, was established in 1685, and Vin de Constance was being exported to Europe in the late 1700s. This is a country with a rich wine making past, developed by both French Hugenots and Dutch Boers, and now being handed from the KWV behemoth to a new rainbow generation of independent winemakers.

The majority of winemaking is in the rugged Western Cape, whose mountainous ancient soils are never far from the cooling effects of the Atlantic and Indian Oceans. We will taste wines from the major coastal regions including Paarl, Stellenbosch, Franschoek, Elgin/Walker Bay and Constantia in the foothills of Table Mountain. Pinotage is South Africa’s signature red grape, and Chenin Blanc has developed a fabulous reputation here, but we will also taste major international varieties such as Chardonnay (still and sparkling), Cabernet Sauvignon, and of course Muscat in sublime Constantia sweet wine.

We look forward to seeing you.
