The Surbiton Wine Society has been launched! We had a tremendous turnout for our inaugural tasting at Glenmore House and a great evening was had by all.
Despite the inevitable classroom style with all the social distancing protocols in place, there was an excellent ambiance and clearly a keen thirst for knowledge!
We practised tasting technique with our first wine – a delicious Vidal Sauvignon Blanc 2019 from Marlborough and then continued to use those newly honed skills with a broad and eclectic range of wines from around the world.
The barrel fermented Chenin Blanc from South Africa illustrated oak influence; our Champagne vs Cremant de Bourgogne saw the vintage Boutillez Guer win easily and everyone was impressed with the rich Valpolicella Ripasso – a style that quite a few were not familiar with.
Our highlight wine was the Gran Reserva 2010 from Valduero bodega in Ribera del Duero. A magnificent example from 2010 that impressed everyone.
We also enjoyed a wonderfully mature Grenache from 2012 from the renowned Kilikanoon estate in Clare Valley.
The evening was rounded off with a delicious sweetie – a Jurançon moelleux from the legendary Charles Hours.
All in all a terrific night – fabulous audience, great set up and support from Glenmore House and I hope to get another tasting in before the end of the year.
All the wines are listed in the wines we have tasted page.
