Swartland Rouge Kloof Street 2021
£18.00
Kloof Street is Chris and Andrea Mullineux’s ‘entry level’ Swartland range, named after the street where they first started making wine – or as they put it, – “effectively semi-legally bootlegging out of our garage”. Kloof Street wines have lovely balance and freshness and offer superb value.
Tinta Barocca, one of the main varieties that go into Port wines, has found the warmth of Swartland to its liking, and makes up half of this blend – grapes come from gnarly old dry farmed vines in the famous Paardeberg. Its naturally high tannins are balanced by the Cinsault and Grenache while Syrah and Carignan add even more complexity. Bush vines mean hand harvesting, enabling whole bunch pressing of part of the blend, adding freshness and elegance. The different parcels of wine were vinified separately and blended in the spring, spending time in barrel before release. Damsons, black cherries, bramble and mulberry meld with restrained spice and chocolate – a fabulous food wine.
