I won the 2019 Wanderlust World Guide Awards Specialist Tour Guide of the Year.

Commended for my infectious passion, and being the perfect link between winemakers and travellers, I was given the award at the National Geographical Society.  The judges based their decision on the feedback from the dozens of clients who have been on tour with me.

Enjoy my tastings

I have an exciting programme of events for Richmond and Teddington Wine Societies events in 2025.

Teddington Wine Society – Rioja @ St Mary's Parish Hall
Jan 24 @ 7:30 pm – 10:00 pm
Teddington Wine Society - Rioja @ St Mary's Parish Hall
We start our year of wine tasting in one of my favourite regions – Rioja.
So much is changing with young winemakers bringing terroir to the fore, and shaking up the old ‘rules’.  While Tempranillo is still king, red wines made from Garnacha are revealing the incredible quality and elegance of this previously underestimated variety.  Rosé and white wines are also undergoing a rennaissance, and there is even now a DO for traditional method sparkling wine.
Tim Syrad, who has 25 years experience of running wine tastings, runs Richmond and Teddington Wine Societies, which meet monthly.  Tim is a fervent advocate that wine is to be enjoyed without snobbery. Whether you are a complete novice or an experienced taster, there will be plenty to learn and enjoy.

Richmond Wine Society – South Africa @ The Britannia
Feb 23 @ 7:30 pm – 10:00 pm
Richmond Wine Society - South Africa @ The Britannia
South Africa continues to be one of the most exciting wine growing countries in the world.
Talented winemakers are creating wines of superb quality, and amazing value, from grape varieties such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Semillon, Chardonnay and Pinot Noir.  Perhaps some of the most exciting are grown in long established regions where old vineyards of Chenin Blanc and Semillon, and of course Pinotage, are producing grapes of great quality making wines of concentration and complexity.
In addition to famous names such as Stellenbosch, Paarl, Franschoek and Constantia we will also be tasting wines from the cooler coastal region of Breede River and the northerly region of Swartland.

Richmond Wine Society - the Veneto @ The Britannia
The Veneto region of north eastern Italy is home to two of its most iconic wines; Soave and Valpolicella.  Our evening will dig deeper into these regions and neighbouring ones that make wines of wonderful quality including whites made from Turbiana in Lugana, and deep ‘chiaretto’ rosés.  We will of course sample some Prosecco, but of course – not Prosecco as we know it, Jim!

Teddington Wine Society - Galicia @ St Mary's Parish Hall
Galicia is home to Albariño, one of the most ‘up and coming’ grape varieties, producing glorious fresh complex white wines, perfect for seafood.  However, this maritime region in North West Spain has a huge variety of other terroirs that follow the rivers that flow down from the high mountains, and we will also taste white wines made from Treixadura, Godello and Torrontes (not that one) and reds made from Mencia.

Richmond Wine Society - the Adriatic @ The Britannia
The Adriatic separates Italy from the Balkans and emerges as the Ionian sea into the Mediterranean near Corfu.  Wine growing regions abound along both coastlines and we will be able to contrast cool elegant white wines made from the Verdicchio variety in le Marche with rich whites made from indigenous varieties in Istria and Dalmatia, while Montepulciano d’Abruzzo offers a superb contrast to the robust reds of Puglia, and the incredible Nebbiolo-like Xinomavro grape variety of Northern Greece.

Teddington Wine Society - French Fizz vs the rest of the world @ St Mary's Parish Hall
France may not have invented sparkling wine, but it certainly owns most of the ‘top end’ of the market.  Or does it?
Our exploration of the world of sparkling wine will allow us to examine whether Champagne and Crémant can rest on their laurels or are being challenged.
And there’s plenty of challengers – Italy, Spain, Australia, New Zealand, the list goes on.  Buckle up, it’s going to be a fizzy ride!

Teddington Wine Society – Bordeaux @ St Mary's Parish Hall
Oct 24 @ 7:30 pm – 10:00 pm
Teddington Wine Society - Bordeaux @ St Mary's Parish Hall
Bordeaux has dominated the world of wine for centuries.  The famous classification of 1855 merely documented what was already known, that the Médoc peninsula has some of best terroirs in the world, and in the following 100 years it came to epitomise wines made from Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot.  But times change and Bordeaux has increasingly been challenged by new regions with more reliable climates, while becoming a victim of its own success, producing more wine that it can sell.  The good news for us is that the Bordelais’ response to these headwinds has been to focus on quality and better value for money, and whether white, rosé, sparkling or red, they are producing wonderful wines at reasonable prices.

“Throughout the 17 years I have attended Tim’s wine tasting events, he has continued to deliver his extensive knowledge of wine and wine-making with great charm, and lots of humour, making the evenings not only informative, but also great fun. In the course of an average year, the tastings cover a kaleidoscope of different wine themes – interesting and entertaining for all, novices and experts alike. And the wines taste pretty good too!”
"We have been going to Teddington Wine Society events for a number of years. Tim runs the evenings with bonhomie and humour and wears his considerable knowledge lightly. The evenings are great fun, the wines are always a little bit different and help to expand knowledge and tasting horizons.”
“I have attended the Richmond Wine society for over ten years and always enjoyed Tim’s self-effacing style and gentle humour. His knowledge is globally eclectic and presented in a clear, interesting and always stimulating way. Every guest I have taken there has enjoyed the evening immensely. Tim also offers a wide range of wines to buy and my red cellar has provided great pleasure to my own dinner guests.”
"I’ve been enjoying Tim’s tastings for over 20 years - he is a great teacher, raconteur and wine expert. He is seriously passionate about his wine, but there is nothing serious about his tastings, which are always informal and relaxed. A lovely way to spend an evening and enjoy some fantastic wines."
