Sauvignon Blanc Greywacke 2020


Greywacke is the winery of Kevin Judd, who was winemaker at Cloudy Bay for 25 years.  In 2009 he set up for himself, and sources select parcels of grapes from growers around Marlborough.  I reckon his wines consistently beat his famous alma mater for quality, interest and value for money.  We met Kevin and his wife Beverley several times during our 2014 tours to New Zealand, and he has spoken at wine events I have run in the UK.

His most popular wine is this Sauvignon Blanc.  It has concentrated, rich flavours of citrus, yellow peaches, blackcurrant leaf and a hint of chamomile.  A small proportion was fermented in oak barrels (the rest in stainless steel), lending it a very attractive creamy texture on the palate.  It has a long, complex finish, and while I wouldn’t insist on this, putting it on its side in a cool dark place for a few years will allow the wonderful flavour and body to meld even more beautifully – the joy of wine is that it is a living thing that evolves in the bottle!

I included the 2019 vintage in our online tasting of New Zealand wines, and recommended it with a favourite recipe of mine – hake en papillotte (recipe links are on the link above).  A strong goat’s cheese like Cacciattona would be a good match.
