Pinot Gris Framingham 2018
Pinot Gris is not a variety one associates with New Zealand. But in Marlborough, where summers are long, sunny and broadly dry, it finds conditions similar to those of Alsace, where the finest Pinot Gris wines in the world are made (unless you happen to come from Friuli).
Grapes ripen fully, and this is a fairly high alcohol wine, but beautifully balanced: pear, apple, quince from the fruit, dough and cream from ageing on the lees, with a touch of wood smoke from the oak and acacia vessels it was partly aged in. On the palate, it has generous flavours of stonefruit and custard with a balanced acidity.
Without doubt this is a wine to be consumed with food. Try it with some falafel, or other Mediterranean tapas, and Chaorce cheese is lovely with it.
