Chianti Mediceo 2019
There is an ocean of Chianti out there, and you need to swim through it carefully to find good stuff. Luckily I’ve done it for you and I am really proud of this lovely, basic Chianti made by Alberto Antonini, an experienced winemaker who is sourcing high quality fruit from across the (very large) Chianti area.
It is made in the classic style: fermented in concrete tanks, with neutral oak used for a short period of ageing. And it expresses the Sangiovese grape beautifully: bright cherry fruit aromas and flavours combined with hints of chocolate and balsamic vinegar, with fine-grain tannins. The finish is savoury with a hint of minerality. A slug of Canaiolo (the original Chianti grape) adds character, and there’s a pinch of Colorino, as the name suggests, for colour.
This is the perfect wine for spaghetti bolognaise, and a Cacciattona goat’s cheese would be super.
