Northern Italian Wine Tasting Online

by | May 26, 2020 | Richmond Wine Society, Teddington Wine Society

We have just loaded the videos of my tastings of Northern Italian Wines onto YouTube.

Following the success of our New Zealand tasting last month we have expanded the selection of wines, made some cheese pairing suggestions, and provided a tasting of seven wines in full and half bottles.

Our Northern Italian Tasting

The wines we are tasting are:

Soave Classico Monteforte
Soave Classico Pieropan
Gavi di Gavi Lugarara
Pinot Grigio Livio Felluga
Valpolicella Torre del Falasco
Barolo Massolino
Moscato d’Asti Contero

Please excuse my indulgence, I actually start in the garden with a rather nice Prosecco, from the Asolo DOCG. but then I move indoors to do the main tasting.

And here’s the video:

It lasts about 30 minutes, but you can stop and start it as you wish, and of course watch it over a few days.  You can download the tasting sheet for your notes.

Remember, you can store opened bottles of white wine in the fridge for 2-3 days, and reds will keep for 3-5 days.  They keep better (ie fresher and for longer) if you tip what’s left into a smaller bottle so that there isn’t much air at the top, and close it with a stopper or vacuvin it.  A well washed beer bottle or soft drink (glass) bottle would be fine.  You can download a tasting sheet here.

There are links below to recipes for the food matches I suggest during the tasting, and the cheeses I pair with the wines during the tasting – all from Teddington Cheese.

Additional tasting of Valpolicellas

In addition to the main tasting of seven wines, I have added an additional video tasting exploring the different styles of Valpolicella  (available in full bottles only): all from the famous Allegrini estate: their basic Valpolicella, and the Corte Giara Ripasso and Corte Giara Amarone.

This has been a wonderful opportunity to revisit some very happy memories from tours I have run to Northern Italy over the last few years.  We have met some outstanding winemakers, enjoyed the best wines they make, and revelled in the beauty of the scenery, the delicious cuisine and the hospitality which Italians never fail to deliver.  I really hope the video conveys the magic we have experienced.

The Credits…

Once again, this is a family affair.  My wife Fliss has delved into her WSET studies to produce a few pages of background about Northern Italian wine regions, using images from my tours – download here.  But the major thanks must go to Julia, our daughter, who rather than finishing her first year at Swansea University has turned her hand to being location scout, set designer, cameraman, lighting engineer, sound technician and editor.  I am a very proud dad….

What next?

If you would like to taste the wines in the video do get in touch, I still have some stock. Prices are on the Wines we have tasted page.

Thank you for watching, any feedback is very welcome.  And please don’t hesitate to get in touch if you would like to order any of the wines featured in the tasting.

“Throughout the 17 years I have attended Tim’s wine tasting events, he has continued to deliver his extensive knowledge of wine and wine-making with great charm, and lots of humour, making the evenings not only informative, but also great fun. In the course of an average year, the tastings cover a kaleidoscope of different wine themes – interesting and entertaining for all, novices and experts alike. And the wines taste pretty good too!”

“We have been going to Teddington Wine Society events for a number of years. Tim runs the evenings with bonhomie and humour and wears his considerable knowledge lightly. The evenings are great fun, the wines are always a little bit different and help to expand knowledge and tasting horizons.”

“I have attended the Richmond Wine society for over ten years and always enjoyed Tim’s self-effacing style and gentle humour. His knowledge is globally eclectic and presented in a clear, interesting and always stimulating way. Every guest I have taken there has enjoyed the evening immensely. Tim also offers a wide range of wines to buy and my red cellar has provided great pleasure to my own dinner guests.”

“I’ve been enjoying Tim’s tastings for over 20 years – he is a great teacher, raconteur and wine expert. He is seriously passionate about his wine, but there is nothing serious about his tastings, which are always informal and relaxed. A lovely way to spend an evening and enjoy some fantastic wines.”
