Surbiton Wine Society

Unfortunately our first event has been postponed to May due to COVID-19.
This website will be kept updated regarding any changes to the timing of our events and anyone who has signed up to attend, or to receive updates about Surbiton Wine Society will be kept informed.

Surbiton Wine Society offers informal, friendly and informative wine tastings.

Our very first event will take place on Monday 4th May at 7.30pm, in the downstairs bar of Glenmore House, The Crescent.  Our subject is “A Whistlestop Tour Round the Wonderful World of Wine”, it will be a great introduction to our programme of events for the rest of the year.

We will commence with a welcome glass of wine, and over the course of the evening we will explore at least eight wines, including contrasting sparkling wines, reds and whites, and  wines from the Old World (ie Europe) and New World. At least one of the wines we taste will retail for more than £50/bottle!

Absolutely no wine expertise is required, and whether you are a complete novice or an experienced taster, there will be plenty to learn and enjoy.  Please use this link to book your ticket, or get in touch by email or phone.

As you can see, during 2020 Surbiton Wine Society will be enjoying the wines of Italy, France, Australia, New Zealand, and Spain and Portugal.  So if you can’t make our first tasting, sign up to receive our regular email updates.

We look forward to meeting you at a tasting soon.

Italy has some of the best wines in the world, but many people don’t get past Chianti. We will certainly enjoy some Chianti (though not in a straw wrapped bottle), but we will also try fresh whites and elegant reds from Piedmont and Friuli in the North, robust red wines from lesser known grape varieties further South, and the magnificent wines of Sicily, a whole world of wine in an island.

We will commence the evening with a welcome drink and taste eight wines – at least one of the wines we taste will retail for more than £50/bottle!

France ‘defines’ classy wine, with wines from Burgundy and Bordeaux occupying the most expensive slots of a restaurant’s wine list. But there is so much more to France, and this session will show that it’s possible to drink very good French wines at very reasonable prices. We will contrast different styles of white wines and red wines, and of course enjoy France’s most famous luxury brand – Champagne!

In the 1970s and 80s, Australia almost invented ‘varietal’ wine – teaching us what to expect from a Chardonnay or a Shiraz. But the range of grape varieties grown and the huge variety of places where wine is made makes Australia one of the most exciting countries it’s possible to explore. And New Zealand of course has defined a grassy style of Sauvignon Blanc, thanks to Cloudy Bay, and produces some seriously elegant Pinot Noirs, but also has a huge variety of varieties and styles to enjoy.

Two countries, Spain and Portugal, whose histories intertwine with Britain’s, and whose most famous wines were developed to all intents and purposes in London and Bristol. While this history was largely built on fortified wines,   most of tasting will focus on light wines – fresh whites from Galicia and Vinho Verde, smooth reds from Rioja and Ribera del Duero, the robust red wines of Priorat and of course Cava, a sparkling wine that should be far better appreciated.
