Zibibbo, Arini Curatolo, Marsala 2019
Made from Muscat (Zibibbo is the Sicilian name for the variety) grown just east of Marsala, at an altitude of 350m – as for so many of Italy’s fresh wines, height affords cooling breezes during the day and significant temperature drops at night. aromas of citrus, orange blossom and acacia with notes of mint, sage and white rose. On the palate, it is medium-bodied with a crisp acidity and hints of bergamot on the long finish.
This is a wine to remind us of summer – perfect with canapés, smoked salmon and fresh goats cheese.
Curatolo Arini has been run by five generations of Curatolos, making it the oldest family-owned Marsala producing business. We met Alexandra Curatolo, of the current generation when we visited the estate on our tours to Sicily in 2017 and 2018. She shared some insights into her ancestors and their role in the development of the Marsala industry and handed us over to export director Carlo Montauto, yet another larger than life character we have met on tour – a fabulous visit. The new range of wines under the art deco Curatolo Arini label showcases a great expression of native Sicilian varieties.
