Wiener Gemischte Satz ‘Nussberb’ Wieninger 2019

Wiener Gemischter Satz is a DAC (Appellation) for field blends of grapes grown in the Wien region, around (and in) the city of Vienna.  They are the typical wines served in the Heurigen wine taverns, that are pretty much a compulsory ending to a day visiting the city.

The Ulm vineyard lies on a very steep southern slope next to the Danube river.  Varieties include Pinot Blanc, Grüner Veltliner, Welschriesling, and Neuberger and many other Austrian natives.  This lovely wine has complex aromas and flavours of citrus, pineapple, blossom and sweet herbs, with lively acidity and a touch of minerality alongside subtle notes of spice over the long finish.  Partial fermentation in large old oak barrels and 10 months of lees ageing has added weight and class.

This is a supremely versatile wine, it can definitely be enjoyed without food, but would complement a wide range of vegetarian, poultry and fish dishes.  I enjoy it best with some simple fresh goat’s cheese in the company of friends after a day visiting Austria’s wonderful vineyards.

Fritz Wieninger is considered a pioneer of the “New Vienna” wine movement, though his family have made wine in the city for over 100 years.  We will visit Fritz on my wine tour to Austria in 2022.
