The Gimblett (Bordeaux Blend) Gimblett Gravels Trinity Hill 2019
£25.00
We visited Trinity Hill during our 2014 tours to New Zealand, and met winemaker Warren Gibson, who has been with Trinity Hill since 1997 and is a pioneer of the famed Gimblett Gravels – free draining soils too infertile to support economic sheep raising, that were rescued in the 1980s from a cement factory by some determined wine growers!
Gimblett Gravels is widely regarded as the best place for Bordeaux varieties in New Zealand. Its gravelly soils and maritime location are similar to the Médoc, although it is significantly sunnier.
This is a fabulous expression of the Cabernet grapes that make up the majority of the blend (Sauvignon 42%, Franc 41%) – violets, blackcurrant, bramble, capsicum, pencil shavings, while Merlot (14%) rounds it out and softens the tannins. 4% Malbec and 16 months in French barriques complete the authentic Bordeaux approach. At our March 2021 Teddington and Richmond Wine Society tasting of New Zealand wines it was really impressive.
A rare steak, bernaise sauce and a piece of Comté cheese would do very nicely.
