Tempranillo Gimblett Gravels Trinity Hill 2019

We visited Trinity Hill during our 2014 tours to New Zealand, and met winemaker Warren Gibson, who has been with Trinity Hill since 1997 and is a pioneer of the famed Gimblett Gravels – free draining soils too infertile to support economic sheep raising, that were rescued in the 1980s from a cement factory by some determined wine growers!

Tempranillo is not a grape variety associated with New Zealand (or indeed many places other than Spain).  This presents a fresh vibrant expression of the variety – intense red fruits with something darker and compote-ey.  The vanilla oak is reassuring Rioja-like.  We tasted it at our March 2021 Teddington and Richmond Wine Society tasting of New Zealand wines, and agreed it was another super foody wine.

Manchego is of course the cheese of choice, but this is a versatile wine with great fruit and forward tannins – a roast, a casserole, or why not tapas?
