Taylors 1961 Very Old Single Harvest Port
This precious wine has matured to a walnut brown core surrounded by a broad rim of pale gold. Its powerful complex aromas include molasses, dried fig and sultana, mingling with nutty marzipan, vanilla, cedarwood and a hint of citrus. On the palate it is round and concentrated, lifted by a burst of fresh acidity on the finish, which is crammed with lingering flavours of butterscotch, almond, orange marmalade and dried fruit. A beautifully balanced wine, still clean and fresh in spite of its many years of maturing in wood.
While this is definitely a wine to savour and contemplate, Taylor’s themselves suggest it could accompany crème brûlée or a plate of wild strawberries. I’m not sure I would bother – it’s one of the very rare wines where I do not feel a cheese would add to the pleasure.
A blend of Touriga Nacional, Touriga Francesa, Tinta Roriz (Tempranillo), Tinta Barroca, Tinta Cão and Tinta Amarela from Taylor’s three great vineyards in the Douro, Quinta de Vargellas, Quinta de Terra Feita and Quinta do Junco. Wines from the 1961 vintage were aged over decades to full maturity in seasoned oak casks.
