The Steinmassl Erste Lage (Austrian equivalent of Premier Cru) vineyard is one of the top sites near Langenlois in the Kamp Valley, where cool nights and a long, sunny autumn extend the growing season and ensure perfect ripeness. Fred Loimer studied at Austria’s renowned Klosterneuburg University and made wine in Germany and the Napa Valley before taking over the winery from his father in 1997.
This is a very serious wine that could be sipped with great pleasure or would go beautifully with a range of rich foods, so if you are planning some lobster thermidor (other crustaceae are available) this is your wine …. For vegetarians, I think a celeriac/anchovy gratin would show off just how powerful and complex this wine is.
I love Morbier, the Savoy semi soft cheese with a layer of ash with this Riesling.
