Ribera del Duero Marqués de Burgos 2016

£12.00

Incredibly given its price, this wine was aged for eight months in oak barrels (70% American, 30% French), followed by 10 months bottle ageing prior to release, and minimal sulphur at bottling.  It is still youthful – intense cherry red in colour, with purple hues, aromas and flavours of wild berries and a hint of violets, liquorice spice and with touches of cocoa and vanilla on the long finish.

In the summer this is a barbecue wine, as delicious under the umbrella as in full sunshine.  And hang onto a bit for your autumn Sunday roasts.  Manchego is the perfect cheese for Tempranillo.

Bodegas LAN is a famous Rioja producer, and have extended to other parts of Northern Spain in search of the highest quality vineyards.  The Marqués de Burgos project in the village of Quintana del Pidio has a high proportion of old, gnarled vines. Very low yields produce wines with concentration, intense colour and smooth tannins.  I have taken tours to Ribera del Duero several times, and we keep coming back to this fantastic region, where the Tempranillo grape finds the perfect conditions to express its power and elegance.
