Pinot Noir Ata Rangi 2013
Ata Rangi, meaning ‘dawn sky, new beginning’ is owned and managed by a family trio – Clive Paton, his wife Phyll and his sister Alison. We visited the Ata Rangi estate in Martinborough during our 2014 tours to New Zealand. Despite their exalted status (Clive is an Officer of the New Zealand Order of Merit) and Phyll were wonderfully down to earth and entertaining.
This is a very classy Pinot Noir from one of New Zealand’s top estates. Exotic spice of star anise and sandalwood layer with dark cherry and rose petal on the nose. As is a hallmark of Ata Rangi Pinot, a savoury herbal note reminiscent of oregano offsets more overt fruit characters. The palate is bright, fluid and focused. Fine tannins build through the mid palate carrying the wine to a long elegant finish.
Perfect with pan-fried duck breast, and I’d finish it off with some Puzzone di Moena.
Also available in half bottle.
