Pinot Grigio Livio Felluga (37.5cl) 2020
£16.00
This is the antidote to anyone suffering from Pinot Grigio fatigue. If you are tired of bland, faintly acidic, faintly smelling of nothing plonk, please try this wine. It combines floral notes with citrus and stone fruits, and even savoury/minerally undertones. Its concentration and weight make it very special.
Colli Orientali di Friuli, where this wine comes from, is on the hilly lands where Italy and Slovenia meet, and for centuries were part of the same country. Enjoying Adriatic sunshine, cooling breezes from the pre-Julian Alps, and abundant rainfall, amid this green landscape grows the best Pinot Grigio in Italy. And Livio Felluga make pretty much the best of the best. We visited the Abbazia Rosazzo during my tours of Friuli-Venezia in 2019, and learnt about the dynamic Signor Felluga, who was an icon of modern Italian winemaking. Our tasting in possibly the most splendid tasting room we have ever been in was outstanding.
I featured this wine in our recent Northern Italian wine video tasting and matched it with Torta – layers of Mascarpone, Gorgonzola and Dolcelatte, the oozing richness matching its weight and vibrant acidity. Food wise I suggest baked salmon with leeks and parsley sauce, but all sorts of summery food would go well.
Also available in full bottle.
