Mencía Cuatro Pasos, Bierzo
The discovery of four bear footprints in a magnificent vineyard in the highest areas of the Bierzo inspired the name of this wine – Cuatro Pasos or Four Steps. Bierzo is in Galicia on the border with Castilla y Léon, and the Mencía grape variety is native to the region. It produces elegant structured wines, as we discovered during our tours to Galicia in 2019.
These Mencía grapes are chosen from old vines (over 60 years of age), and the wine is cherry red in colour with violet hues. Typical aromas of cherry, plum and violet on the nose with subtle hints of vanilla from the two to three months in oak barrels (75% French, 25% American). lead to a fresh and well-structured palate, with a fruit driven finish.
If you have one handy, some roasted goat was perfect with the Mencías we drank in Bierzo, other meats are available. Truffles definitely go well. Keep an eye out for that goat – a Garrotxa cheese would be perfect!
Winner of Gold Medals at both the 2020 Decanter and Sommelier Wine Awards.
