Crémant Bride Valley NV
This delicious creamy wine is the first English “Crémant” (a French term used for wines made in the same way that Champagne is made in other regions, but here used to denote a softer fizz and slightly higher ‘dosage’ – avoiding the ‘bone dry’ character of in my opinion too many English sparklers). Aromas of white flowers and white summer fruits are followed by a delicious rich palate – perfect for smoked salmon, and my favourite cheese for high quality fizz – Petit Langres.
The blend is mainly Chardonnay, with around 13% Pinot Noir and 8% Meunier. It is a blend of the 2015 and 2016 vintages. Steven Spurrier, famed wine critic and writer, is now a winemaker, on his wife Bella’s Dorset sheep farm. Bride Valley has been sustainably farmed for centuries and although the grapes are not certified organic, the vineyard continues to follow organic principles. Italian Alder trees have been planted to act as a natural windbreak to the breezes coming from the Jurassic Coast, four miles to the south.
