Chardonnay Trinity Hill, Hawkes Bay 2021
£17.50
During our 2014 tours to New Zealand, we visited Trinity Hill and met winemaker Warren Gibson. Hawkes Bay is the best area in New Zealand to produce Chardonnay. On the east coast of the North Island, it has loads of sunshine, and cooling sea breezes that ensure perfect ripeness in the grapes.
This harmonious wine has benefitted from time in oak barrels, on the fine lees (remnants of grapes and yeast after fermentation) that are stirred to ensure it develops a rich smooth flavour. A creamy, buttery nose with a refreshing palate of citrus and tropical fruit, it has a long finish and smooth texture.
In our online tasting of New Zealand wines, I recommended pairing the 2016 vintage with a roast guinea fowl with a lemon and tarragon sauce. The cheese for me with this wine is Appleby’s Red Cheshire from the Teddington Cheese.
