We head to Northern Spain (note the revised date: 5th April) for a battle of the giants as we compare and contrast some of the top wines from Rioja and Ribera del Duero.
These two areas are the best known in Spain, with Rioja the powerhouse of the Spanish wine economy and Ribera – not intimidated by scale – producing extremely high quality wines.
Tempranillo is the key grape but others, including Cabernet Sauvignon, also play supporting roles and we will examine the differences in terroir as well as explore the classifications of Crianza, Reserva and Gran Reserva.
We will inevitably need to dive into the debate about Traditional vs Modern winemaking approaches, but most importantly we will taste a fabulous range of wines from top estates.
