Richmond Wine Society - Rioja vs Ribera @ The Britannia Pub

We head to Northern Spain for a battle of the giants as we compare and contrast some of the top wines from Rioja and Ribera del Duero.

These two areas are the best known in Spain, with Rioja the powerhouse of the Spanish wine economy and Ribera – not intimidated by scale – producing extremely high quality wines.

Tempranillo is the key grape but others, including Cabernet Sauvignon, also play supporting roles and we will examine the differences in terroir as well as explore the classifications of Crianza, Reserva and Gran Reserva.

We will inevitably need to dive into the debate about Traditional vs Modern winemaking approaches, but most importantly we will taste a fabulous range of wines from top estates.

The Britannia will create an authentic two course Spanish dinner to accompany our Spanish adventure.

Tim Syrad, who has 25 years experience of running wine tastings, runs Richmond Wine Society, which meets (generally) on the last Tuesday and Wednesday of the month at the Britannia Pub, Brewer’s Lane, Richmond.  Tim is a fervent advocate that wine is to be enjoyed without snobbery. Whether you are a complete novice or an experienced taster, there will be plenty to learn and enjoy.  Tim also runs the monthly Teddington Wine Society and hosts fine wine tastings and dinners in local restaurants.
