Our July tasting takes us to wonderfully verdant but relatively unknown northwest Spain and northern Portugal.
Galicia has a climate that is very different to the rest of Spain and has developed a range of grapes and wine styles that will surprise and impress. Albariño is perhaps the best known variety that has found fame and fortune in the last two decades but there is a wealth of other grapes such as Godello and Mencia that are becoming better known. Northern Portugal is best known for its Vinho Verde, the quality of which has never been higher and contrasts with the oxidised styles of yesteryear.
This is the perfect midsummer tasting as it will be jam packed full of zippy zesty whites, sparkling wines and fresh summery reds.
Tim Syrad, who has 25 years experience of running wine tastings, runs Richmond Wine Society, which meets (generally) on the last Tuesday and Wednesday of the month at the Britannia Pub, Brewer’s Lane, Richmond. Tim is a fervent advocate that wine is to be enjoyed without snobbery. Whether you are a complete novice or an experienced taster, there will be plenty to learn and enjoy. Tim also runs the monthly Teddington Wine Society and hosts fine wine tastings and dinners in local restaurants.
