Bordeaux has dominat
ed the world of wine for centuries. The famous classification of 1855 mer
ely documented what was already known\, that the Médoc peninsula has some
of best terroirs in the world\, and in the following 100 years it came to
epitomise wines made from Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. But times change
and Bordeaux has increasingly been challenged by new regions with more re
liable climates\, while becoming a victim of its own success\, producing m
ore wine that it can sell. The good news for us is that the Bordelais’ re
sponse to these headwinds has been to focus on quality and better value fo
r money\, and whether white\, rosé\, sparkling or red\, they are producing
wonderful wines at reasonable prices.
